El Carmen, Valencia

The barrio El Carmen, once a serious working area is now the "nightlife" district of Valencia, with a huge selection of bars, restaurants and night clubs to suit all tastes. Years ago it was a working area, with silvermiths, goldsmiths and tanner workshops filling the small Valencian streets. It was in the 70´s when the first bars opened, attracting a mixed clientelle from the School of fine arts and Economics Faculty situated closeby.

Since then the El Carmen district has continued to grow, and has now expanded into Valencia busiest night time district, with something for everyone from sleezy bars, chic restaurants, tapas caverns, gambling casinos and night clubs with a vast mixture of music tastes.

El Carmen, in the heart of the historic quarter, is an excellent situation for easy acces to the rest of the City, the Plaza de la Virgen, is a tranquil square with open air terraces for dining and refreshments, surrounded by historical buildings, Valencias´ Cathedral and the Church - Real Basilica de la virgen de la Desemparados. Quite often a bride and groom can be seen parading across the plaza and posing for photos by the spectacular fountain.
