The World Cup Trophy in Valencia

Spains moment of glory, the World Cup, had its prize piece on display in the Science Museum at the City of arts and sciences in Valencia. I went along to view it...World Cup Trophy in Valencia read more...

The World Cup Trophy in Valencia

After arriving in Valencia on the 18th of September, the World Cup trophy went on a whistle stop tour of the region before returning to the 100 years of Football exhibition at the Principe Felipe Museum in the City of Arts and Sciences.
The turn out to see the World Cup Trophy, which was won by Spain earlier this year in South Africa, was everything you would expect, queues at all hours of the day. I thought I would be clever and get there early, but a good 200 more Spanish (who are not great early morning people) had beaten me too it! However, once the exhibition opened the queue moved fairly quickly and in the end I only had an hours wait.
Entry was free and you were able to take your own photos, pose and touch as much as you liked, you just had to put up with the embarrasement of the rest of the queue watching you. (which didn´t seem to bother the Spanish at all!) Being a true Brit... I hid my "will I look ridiculous" doubts, and stepped up to the pedastal, took the World Cup Trophy in my hands, and the smile was automatic.

There was a whole selection of cups and trophies on display, including the European Championship Cup, also won by Spain in 2008 and current holders. This was also a big photo shoot point, but with less audience. Also on display was the UEFA Cup and Copa del Rey (Kings Cup) the Spanish equivalent of the FA cup.

The rest of the exhibition had some photos and historic football memorabilia, but it was very overshadowed by its prize piece the World Cup Trophy.

National Strike Spain, Latest Metrovalencia news

Metrovalencia, different lines are functioning normally since the start of the day, with the only incident recorded in the early hours of two stations - the Patraix and Bell - who had the locks on the doors shut, but they could be opened without problems, according to Europa Press and sources of Railways of the Generalitat Valenciana (FGV).

Also, at 5.38 am, a Line 1 train to the Valencian town of Villanueva de Castellón making an out of service journey to its starting point, met two burning tires on the track, which were removed without incident.

FGV has been noted that different lines of Metrovalencia are workin at "completely normal" levels and are in compliance with minimum service. However, a preliminary assessment, has found that there is less flow of passengers than a regular day at rush hour and there are no crowds at the entrances.

Video: Last trip for the old America's Cup "dinosaurs"

Video: Last trip for the old America's Cup "dinosaurs": "According to the new 'world order' that has now been established in the sport of sailing, the 'old and boring' big monohulls, like the dinosaurs, are destined to become an extinct species, at least in the America's Cup. A pair of those yachts, NZL-84 and NZL-92, were loaded yesterday in Auckland onto a cargo ship heading for Dubai. Emirates Team New Zealand will provide the two yachts that will be used in the upcoming Louis Vuitton Trophy in Dubai. In fact, it will be the last time an IACC yacht is used in official racing.

El Carmen, Valencia

The barrio El Carmen, once a serious working area is now the "nightlife" district of Valencia, with a huge selection of bars, restaurants and night clubs to suit all tastes. Years ago it was a working area, with silvermiths, goldsmiths and tanner workshops filling the small Valencian streets. It was in the 70´s when the first bars opened, attracting a mixed clientelle from the School of fine arts and Economics Faculty situated closeby.

Since then the El Carmen district has continued to grow, and has now expanded into Valencia busiest night time district, with something for everyone from sleezy bars, chic restaurants, tapas caverns, gambling casinos and night clubs with a vast mixture of music tastes.

El Carmen, in the heart of the historic quarter, is an excellent situation for easy acces to the rest of the City, the Plaza de la Virgen, is a tranquil square with open air terraces for dining and refreshments, surrounded by historical buildings, Valencias´ Cathedral and the Church - Real Basilica de la virgen de la Desemparados. Quite often a bride and groom can be seen parading across the plaza and posing for photos by the spectacular fountain.

Valencia Bioparc - a day on safari

Valencia bioparc is spectacular, a must see for anyone visiting or even living in Valencia. I must admit its not cheap at about 25€ per adult, but you can certainly pass a day there. I asked about the "berde" yearly pass, which is valued at 54€ (ish), i was a little bit doubtfull at paying out before seeing, but that was no problem... I was able to pay to enter for the day then if I decided I liked what I saw, the days entrance fee would be discounted from the yearly pass price...bargain, try before you buy!

Of course, I fell in love with the place, how can you not... animals have the freedom rome around as if in their own habitat, the setting is absolutely stunning with rocks, trees and running water everywhere. The viewing areas are spacious so you could always get a good look at the animals, even if they were sheltering from the sun.

So of course, I paid the rest of the price to become a yearly member.

Now whenever I have a spare day, afternoon or even a couple of hours... I can just pop along and spend some time relaxing among the animals, sit on the terrace of the cafe, sup a cool lager in the company of giraffes, antelopes and other wild animals and watch the time go by. And of course having paid the price of 2 visits for the yearly pass, I am now visiting for FREE! even better!

Check out their website for more details...Bioparc  Valencia

The Festivity of La Mercè

The Festivity of La Mercè: "Barcelona city will once again welcome the arrival of its great festivity. On 24 September is the Virgen de la Mercè (Virgin of the Mercè day), one of the patron saints of the city, and for nine days, Barcelona will be celebrating this event by filling its streets with activities, music, festivities and surprises to commemorate its great festivity. Every year there are activities which have become a classic during this festivity, such as the Correfoc (Fire Party), La Festa del Cel (The Sky Party) (aerobatics); the popular Marathon or the Piromusical (a show involving fireworks, music and other visual elements); an amazing firework display which is coordinated with Montjuïc’s luminous fountain. In as far as the cultural proposal, the program will once again include the traditional BAM (Barcelona Acció Musical), with the best current musical tracks, and the MAC (Mercè Street Art), to enjoy the works of international artists on the streets of Barcelona. This year, la Mercè has invited Dakar, capital of Senegal, to be its guest city. Therefore, the concerts’ program which will take place on 23, 24, 25 and 26 September, will include many African artists performing their traditional music, along with modern Hip Hop and well known DJs.

"

La Mercè music

La Mercè music: "Every year, during the Mercè, music plays the leading role in the Fiesta Mayor celebrations. Besides the BAM (Barcelona Acció Musical, a festival within the Mercè, which includes the best performances by current artists of the Catalonian, national and international music scene), music will be present throughout the entire city within a more “conventional” proposal. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of performances by well-known bands and solo artists in characteristic locations within the city, such as the Plaza de Catalunya or the Plaza Sant Jaume. Artists such as Loquillo, Quimi Portet, la Salseta del Poble Sec, La Unión, El Sueño de Morfeo or Delafé and Flores Azules will be performing alongside shows involving Habaneras, Choirs and Flamenco (this year to pay tribute to Camarón). In the current edition, Dakar is the guest city, and we can all enjoy performances by many well-known African bands and artists, such as Doudou N’diaye Rose, Tactequeté and Coetus.

Superando 30km/h en el centro historico

Sir, you have just gone over the 30km/h speed limit in the historic city centre! ...thank you, I've been trying to do so for months! Lol

Valencia put speed limit into place

The "ayuntamiento" town hall of valencia prohibit the circulation of the city centre in car to 30km/h..including all the main streets of the city of valencia. ...like any of the spanish care, or even know speed limits exist! Just like red traffic lights, it all gets ignored! But I guess they can try.

Ankle injury rules Arsenal's Abou Diaby out of Champions League opener

Ankle injury rules Arsenal's Abou Diaby out of Champions League opener: "

• Midfielder injured in brief appearance against Bolton
• Thomas Vermaelen also misses game against Braga with injury

Abou Diaby has been ruled out of Arsenal's next two games as a result of an ankle injury he sustained against Bolton on Saturday, while Thomas Vermaelen will also be absent for tomorrow's Champions League tie against Braga at the Emirates Stadium.

Diaby played just 11 minutes of the 4-1 win over Bolton, between coming on as a second-half substitute and being injured after a tackle from the visitors' full-back Paul Robinson. Vermaelen missed that game with an achilles injury from which he has yet to recover.

'Diaby is out with an ankle problem following the tackle from Robinson and I do not know for how long,' Arsène Wenger said today. 'He will not play tomorrow and certainly not at the weekend. Thomas Vermaelen is out as well with an achilles problem coming back from Belgium, so we do not have him either. We have [Theo] Walcott, [Robin] Van Persie, [Nicklas] Bendtner and [Aaron] Ramsey already out. Now Vermaelen and Diaby, so that is quite a good team out.'

With Shakhtar Donetsk and Partizan Belgrade the other sides in Group H, Arsenal are considered likely to make it into the knockout stages for the 11th successive season. Once there, Wenger feels that they have the quality to succeed but that they have in the past lacked self-belief.

'The mental side is the issue of everybody,' Wenger said. 'The problem as well is that the level of competition is high and in the second part of the tournament, it becomes a real cup game – when it is knockout it becomes a different competition. You have to have your best players available, the decisions to go for you and all that. We are always there, the quarters or the semi-final. The fact is the mental side of believing we can do it. However, it is too early to speak about winning it – let's qualify first.

'We are used to the competition and people expect us to go through because we have gone through the group stage for 10 consecutive years. We have to deal with the fact that in many games in the Champions League we are favourites. That is the price we pay for being in the competition for a long time.

Braga came through two rounds of qualifying to take their place among Europe's elite for the first time – beating both Celtic and Sevilla along the way.

'They have a strong Brazilian influence in their team, are physically strong and are well organised,' said Wenger. 'Braga is a team which plays with a very quick transition from defence to attack. What impresses me is that they finished in front of Porto and also in the qualifying round they knocked Sevilla out – that helps us to be on our toes.'

Valencia CF Season

Valencia CF Season: "

balonSo here we are.

Two liga matches have passes and two victories have been checked off in the win section.

We are second place… woo hoo.

So why are there still so many disenting voices in the stands and forums.

Is Valencia not doing exactly what is needed?

I for one am not going to add a voice of dissent.

The current Valencia squad this year has impressed me.

Its true that the flash and magic of the Villa Silva combo is gone.

1284400419279_enviofotografos_20100913_194538There is a noticable difference in the danger levels up front.

And yet we still manage to scrape through and win.

The lack of goals isnt a concern as long as they dont add up to a lack of points.

Here is where i differ from many fans of Valencia currently.

This Valencia squad reminds me more of the Valencia squad that won la liga and made it to the end of the Champions league.

It is much better rounded.

Back then we didnt have David Villa to create miracles.

What we had was a solid squad of players that had dedication and drive.

We squeaked in 1-0 wins all the time in those years and managed to take it all in the end.

Im not saying Valencia are going to win the league this season, far from it.

Barca and Madrid all star teams are sure to be the only challengers for that.

But what i am saying is that with the current team we have every reason to beleive that 3rd place is acheivable.

1284300711811_sesion-12-septiembre-g-2010Emery has created a team. Not of stars but of individuals who seem to be clicking quickly.

Remember that a large contigent of these guys have never played together.

Today Valencia fly to Turkey to kick the ball around in the Champions league.

All indications are that this will not be an easy match.

The Turkish squads tend to be far more physical and quick.

But Valencia is technically superior and with Cesar in net i have faith that these points will come home.

My prediction a 1 nil win for Valencia.

AMUNT VALENCIA

Javier De Roque

PS. It was really a pleasure to meet reader Felix and his girlfriend on their visit to Valencia. Im so happy you enjoyed the match.

I hope to meet more of you all in person whenever you visit Valencia.

34th Americas Cup, release of Protocol, boat class for 2013

[Source: BMW Oracle] The America’s Cup, sailing’s most acient and richest event, has been announced for 2013.
The venue will be announced before the end of the year, with the 2013 date it will more than likely be a choice between Valencia and Italy

The Boat class has been decided on as AC72 wingsail Catamarans

To help promote the 34th Americas Cup to the widest audience possible, a new annual World Series will commence in 2011 designed deliver exciting racing to new audiences ahead of the America’s Cup Match in 2013.

Highlights include:

 New, exciting class of boat, the AC72 wingsail catamaran

 New annual World Series starting in 2011

 New Youth America’s Cup from 2012

 Transformed media for television broadcast and online

 Shorter, action-packed race format

 Race delays minimized – new boat and venues with reliable wind

 Independent race management and fully empowered International Jury to avoid show-stopping disputes

 Effective cost-cutting measures

 Branding freedom for teams

 One global website for all team and racing content

“We believe this new format and new boat will put the America’s Cup back at the pinnacle of our sport. These changes will give equal opportunity to competitors and long-term economic stability to all teams and all commercial partners. We promised fairness and innovation and this is what we’ve delivered,” said Russell Coutts, CEO of BMW ORACLE Racing.

“I think that we need to acknowledge that the Defender has kept its word. The America’s Cup is going to have fair rules and a truly independent management of the racing,” said Vincenzo Onorato, President of Mascalzone Latino.
“This change should’ve happened years ago in my opinion. I can see why this important development could last for many years in the future,” Onorato said.

The introduction of "onboard" cameramen is planned to enhance the viewers enjoyment of the 34th Americas cup and help to increase the audience bringing better value to teams, fans and partners.

“During our six months of planning we spoke to the teams, to commercial partners, to media and to the fans. A clear and compelling vision emerged – that to capture and communicate the excitement our sport can produce, we need the best sailors racing the fastest boat in the world,” Coutts said.

Also a new Youth Americas Cup will be introduced at the beginnning of 2012 as a new initiative to provide young sailors a route to the Americas Cup in the future.
